ABOMINATION - A DUP OPERA
Abomination - A DUP Opera (Associate Producer)
I worked with the Belfast Ensemble to deliver two tours of ABOMINATION (Lyric Theatre/Abbey Theatre/Southbank Centre/Theatre Royal Brighton, Brighton Festival) – this award-winning new work (Irish Times Theatre Award ‘Best Opera’) went to Electric Picnic, the first ever contemporary opera at that Festival.
‘This provocative opera deserves a wider audience.’ – ***** Fiona Maddocks, The Observer
‘Political satire in opera is relatively rare and often unsuccessful despite the achievements of Offenbach and Kurt Weill in Weimar republic mode. Abomination, however, more than holds its own in such exalted company.’ - ***** Tim Ashley, The Guardian.
‘Simultaneously terrifying, hilarious and deeply moving, Abomination is a masterclass in making a modern operatic masterpiece.’ – ***** Raphael Kohn, All That Dazzles
‘With all that the Good Friday agreement achieved under threat, this is truly an opera for our times.’ – ***** Barry Creasy, OMH Music
‘Conor Mitchell’s work responding to an infamous episode of hate speech is a devastatingly precise musical weapon.’ – **** Alexandra Coughlan, inews
‘Brilliantly, angrily satirical... moving and shocking’ – **** Richard Morrison, The Times ‘Conor Mitchell makes his mark.’ – **** George Hall, The Stage
